Author's Battle with Undiagnosed Dyslexia Leads to Support of Lexis Prep
Lexis Preparatory School to Receive Portion of Book Sales
Scottsdale, AZ, Oct. 7, 2010 – For Gary Lehrer of Gilbert, living with dyslexia was a constant battle as a child. Undiagnosed while attending school, he would dodge reading and writing exercises frequently. Through grit and determination, he was able to struggle his way through school and worked his way up the corporate ladder to become president of a successful construction company.
It wasn’t until Lehrer was in his 20’s that he realized he was dyslexic. From the moment he understood why he was having such difficulties, Lehrer was committed to one day helping children facing similar circumstances. Having recently written, Driving Results: A Positive Effect on Employees’ Lives, a book teaching results-based thinking in business, Lehrer decided to donate portions of book sales to Lexis Preparatory School Scottsdale, a K – 8th-grade college-prep private school providing educational services to children with dyslexia, as well as ADHD, anxiety and other learning differences.
“I don’t want any child to go through the same experience as I did when I was in school,” Lehrer said. “Dyslexia is not a life sentence for failure, as I have proven. With the right support, students can learn to live with dyslexia and succeed in school and beyond.”
Searching for a way to help children with dyslexia, which impacts five to 10 percent of the population, Lehrer discovered Lexis Prep and its unique teaching model. After meeting with the school’s educators, touring its beautiful campus and meeting students and parents, he decided to support Lexis Prep.
“I was impressed by the school’s individualized approach to education,” Lehrer continued. “It’s encouraging to see students who are struggling receive immediate assistance to overcome the difficulties they experience in class. These children are building confidence in their abilities, which will benefit them greatly as they continue with their education.”
