Bonnie Dougherty
Head of School
Bonnie took over as Head of Lexis Prep School in February, 2010, following a thirty-one year career in the Montgomery County Public School System (MCPS) in Rockville, Maryland. During her career in MCPS, Bonnie was an elementary school principal for 15 years and a program coordinator for the Division of Speech and Language Programs where she oversaw the provision of speech and language services in 60 elementary and secondary schools.  Prior to working in the public schools, Bonnie taught at two private schools for students with learning disabilities in McLean, Virginia, and in Potomac, Maryland.
Under Bonnie’s leadership, the K-8 student population at Lexis has tripled in size and the school has added a high school program.  Bonnie also serves as the Director of Admissions and oversees marketing, outreach, and business operations for the school With the support of the Directors of Lexis, Bonnie has led the school in becoming a model for the seamless integration of executive function and social thinking skills for all students.  Bonnie has also continued to champion a team-oriented and collaborative environment where all students can learn at high levels given equal opportunities and appropriate accommodations.  Bonnie feels strongly that an active home-school partnership is vital to a student’s progress and growth.  Toward that end, she coordinates monthly parent symposiums and works closely with the Lexis Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) to promote parent-school involvement.  Bonnie shares this passion with PEN-Phoenix (Parent Education Network) where she also serves on their advisory board.

Bonnie holds a bachelors degree from Ithaca College in New York and a masters degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in Speech Pathology and Audiology.  She has also completed postgraduate coursework in administration, supervision, leadership training, curriculum development, counseling, and educational law.

When not at Lexis, Bonnie enjoys reading, taking photos, exercising, learning how to cohabitate with the Arizona wildlife and watching her husband fly fish on the Snake River in Idaho.
